The Brittle Thorn

Pomegranate, Pistols, and the Fragile Everyday

All beauty easily obtained is lined with unseen thorns.

A vertical oil painting of a pale mint-green table scattered with pomegranates, yellow fruit, flower petals, and glass vessels holding delicate branches. Red juice runs across the patterned cloth in irregular stains. A dark pistol enters diagonally from the lower-right edge, its barrel pointing toward the center beneath a field of soft green, orange, pink, and cream brushwork.

An adabana is a flower that blooms without bearing fruit: an appearance of fulfilment with no future growing from it.

In Hydon BAI’s The Brittle Thorn, the table appears abundant. Pomegranates have been opened, flowers unfold, and porcelain and glass vessels receive a gentle light. Yet the logic of abundance has been reversed. The pistol is not an intruder arriving from outside. It rests quietly among the fruit, like a rule already absorbed into everyday life.

Vanitas painting used ripe fruit, flowers, and decaying matter to make time and mortality visible. This series inherits the still life’s mode of looking while relocating the source of danger. The threat no longer belongs to future decay; it is a form of power already installed in the present. Pomegranate juice and blood become visually inseparable, allowing temptation and sacrifice to occupy the same colour.

In the 1970s, punk tore at respectable surfaces through noise, safety pins, and direct offence. Half a century later, coercion no longer needs a brutal appearance. It can be elegant, polished, and carefully designed. It enters taste, consumption, and private space until it becomes part of the environment itself.

The Brittle Thorn is not a simple opposition between beauty and violence. It asks how the two sustain one another: beauty makes danger acceptable, while danger makes beauty appear more fragile. Across four paintings, sweetness becomes intrusion, intrusion cools into aftermath, and visible force gives way to automatic obedience—a silent riot staged in classical light.

Seduction
A square oil painting viewed from above. A dark metal pistol rests across a large white platter surrounded by split pomegranates, loose red seeds, and pools of bright red juice. Pale glass vessels, a striped drinking straw, and fragments of flowers sit around the plate, all painted in warm cream, muted lavender, orange, and crimson tones.

Pretty Vacant

2025 / Oil on canvas / 40 × 40 cm

Seen from above, the plate becomes a small altar. The gun does not rupture the elegance of the scene; elegance receives and presents it. Immediate pleasure becomes a soft exchange in which vigilance is surrendered and vacancy is mistaken for abundance.

Intrusion
A vertical oil painting of a pale mint-green table scattered with pomegranates, yellow fruit, flower petals, and glass vessels holding delicate branches. Red juice runs across the patterned cloth in irregular stains. A dark pistol enters diagonally from the lower-right edge, its barrel pointing toward the center beneath a field of soft green, orange, pink, and cream brushwork.

Anarchy in the Domestic

2025 / Oil on canvas / 40 × 60 cm

The pale tablecloth and flowering branches preserve the calm of a summer afternoon while a pistol cuts diagonally into the scene. Power does not destroy the domestic space; it inhabits it. Beauty becomes vulnerable precisely because it has learned to remain undefended.

Aftermath
A wide oil painting of a pale table covered with green leaves, white flowers, yellow fruit, and opened pomegranates. Dark red juice spreads across the cloth near an empty white plate. A brown metal handgun lies diagonally in the lower-right foreground, while glass vessels and flowering branches cast long shadows across the cool blue-green setting.

The Sabotage

2025 / Oil on canvas / 40 × 60 cm

The banquet has receded. Juice darkens, the plate is empty, and the gun remains like a witness that has completed its task. Rebellion appears here not as noise but as cooling matter: the quiet failure of a classical still-life order and the persistence of what cannot be undone.

Conditioning
A horizontal oil painting seen from floor level. A pair of bare legs in ivory-white high heels crosses glossy turquoise tiles beside a bright yellow toy duck. Open pomegranates, red seeds, flower petals, and a thick twisted rope are scattered across the reflective floor. Pink floral arrangements and rounded decorative objects appear at the outer edges of the blue interior.

No Future

2025 / Oil on canvas / 40 × 60 cm

A synthetic duck follows an ivory heel across broken fruit and a rope laid in its path. The series moves from visible weapons to quieter control: desire, taste, and direction shaped in advance. “No Future” becomes not a refusal of what lies ahead, but the discovery that the promised future was never one’s own.
